WELCOME TO NORTH COAST STRINGS!

Do you know about the North Coast Strings Adult Orchestra?
Interested in joining the orchestra ?

Never picked up a Violin, Viola, Cello, or Bass but always wanted to?

START WITH US!

About The Group:
It's for those who haven't played a stringed instrument in a number of years we even have a class for the absolute beginning stringed instrument player.

We have three sessions a year; fall, spring and summer with each session ending in with a concert.

North Coast Strings, directed by Paula Simmons, is hosted at the Museum of Making Music. It started in 2008 on election night with less than 20 players. And now in 2017 we're more than 70 players strong, plus 5 instrumental coaches.

North Coast Strings Summer of Innovation 2017

Each summer, the North Coast Strings adult orchestra program explores something new. In summers past we have done a cello choir, small ensembles, and a chamber orchestra.

This summer we will once again try something new!

On Tuesday evenings, we will present “Technique Tuesdays” and on Thursday evenings we will present a “Chamber Orchestra” with opportunities for members to play solos.

What is Chamber Music?
The term “chamber” is basically an adjective that denotes the space in which the music was to be performed. It comes from the French term “chambre,” meaning room. In context, a chamber orchestra refers an orchestra (a group of musicians) who play in rooms rather than a full-sized concert halls. The acoustic limitations mean that chamber orchestras are smaller as opposed to a full orchestra. The music of a chamber orchestra sounds very different due to the smaller number of instruments, orchestration, and acoustics of the performance space.

North Coast Strings Summer Chamber Orchestra:
Approximately 20 seats are open for this chamber group experience that will be conducted by Paula Simmons. A balance of instruments is necessary to have a successful chamber orchestra sound. In order to establish this balance, and to provide a chamber music experience, we would ideally have:
3 to 6—1st Violins;
3 to 6—2nd Violins;
3 to 4—Violas;
3 to 4—Cellos;
1—Bass.

Paula Simmons will be holding auditions for anyone who would like to participate in the Chamber Orchestra. Participants can play in the ensemble, or they can choose to audition to play a solo as well. Please contact Paula Simmons to schedule your audition!!!

Repertoire and Coaching:
The repertoire will be challenging for the adult amateur player, and our usual section coaches will not be present at rehearsals. We will, however, schedule two structured coaching sessions. A concert will be given in late September in conjunction with the Technique Tuesday group performances. With the two groups, we anticipate that it will be the first concert we have ever given that will actually have an intermission!

Thursday Rehearsal Dates:

July 6, 13, 20, 27
August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
(we will probably cancel one of the August rehearsals)

Registration Fee for Chamber Orchestra: $195
